What is the ABG Certificate?
ABG stands for Allgemeine Bauartgenehmigung and is an official approval required in Germany for the use of certain construction products — including automotive window films.
The certification is issued by the Kraftfahrt-Bundesamt (KBA) after the film is tested for:
- Safety in case of glass breakage
- Fire behavior and material stability
- Adhesion to the glass surface
- Visual properties such as visible light transmission (VLT)
Why is the ABG Certificate Mandatory in Germany?
In Germany, it is legally required to use window film with ABG certification on vehicles. The certificate must be present inside the vehicle.
Without a valid certificate, you risk:
- Failing the TÜV inspection or APK in Germany
- Fines during police checks
- Issues with import/export or insurance claims
How to Recognize Films with ABG Certification
All window films with ABG certification:
- Come with an official certificate
- Have a permanently laser-engraved certificate number in the film
- May only be applied to rear windows and rear side windows
In Which Countries is the ABG Certificate Relevant?
The ABG certificate is mandatory in Germany and is recognized or valued in several other countries. In many countries it is not required, but it is seen as an extra quality guarantee.
Germany | Italy | Austria | Spain |
Portugal | Switzerland |
In the Netherlands, Belgium, France, and other European countries, ABG is not mandatory, but it can be useful for export, insurance, or inspections. Always check local regulations.
